βοΈConclusions
In this project, we set out to create an ontology that accurately interprets and describes the societal phenomenon of youth subcultures. By applying a multi-level modeling strategy, we aimed to construct a comprehensive and detailed framework that reflects the intricate nature of youth subcultures, ensuring that our approach was both systematic - enhanced by the use of large language models (LLMs) - and grounded in sociological theory.
At the first level of our ontology, we focused on designing a model that encapsulates the core concepts and relationships inherent to youth subcultures. Guided by a specific sociological theory outlined in our theoretical framework, we sought to capture the essential elements that define these subcultures. This foundational level was crucial in ensuring that the primary sociological aspects were accurately represented, serving as the bedrock upon which further enhancements could be built.
In the second level, we enhanced the initial ontology by integrating a perspectivisation thematic. This involved adding new classes and properties, guided by design patterns from the ontologydesignpattern.org repository and the PERSPECTIVISATION ontology developed by Aldo Gangemi. This enhancement allowed us to incorporate diverse perspectives, adding depth and complexity to our representation of youth subcultures.
The third and final level involved merging the elemental ontology with the perspectivisation enhancements into a cohesive whole. This integration ensured that our ontology not only captured the core sociological concepts but also represented the complex interplay of perspectives within youth subcultures. The resulting ontology was tested and validated against a dataset comprising articles, blogs, and interviews, confirming its accuracy and robustness. Automatic inferences were obtained by running a reasoner in ProtΓ©gΓ©.
Ultimately, the resulting ontology provides a structured and flexible framework that supports further analysis and research in the field of Cultural Studies. It lays the groundwork for more nuanced and comprehensive studies of youth subcultures, providing valuable insights that enrich the broader field of sociological research.
